Graham Hess (Mel Gibson), a former Episcopal priest, resides on a rural farm in Pennsylvania with his asthmatic son Morgan (Rory Culkin), young daughter Bo (Abigail Breslin), and younger brother Merrill (Joaquin Phoenix), a former minor league baseball player. Graham has renounced his faith following the tragic death of his wife, Colleen.
The family's life is disrupted when mysterious crop circles appear in their cornfields. Initially dismissed as pranks, these formations are soon reported worldwide, accompanied by sightings of hovering lights over major cities. The Hess family experiences unsettling events: strange noises through baby monitors, glimpses of shadowy figures, and news footage revealing alien beings.
As global panic escalates, the Hess family barricades themselves in their home. They endure a harrowing night in the basement, during which Morgan suffers a severe asthma attack. The next morning, news reports indicate that the aliens have abruptly retreated.
