Side Effects (2013) is a psychological thriller directed by Steven Soderbergh, featuring Rooney Mara, Jude Law, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Channing Tatum. The film delves into themes of mental health, pharmaceutical ethics, and deception.
Emily Taylor (Rooney Mara) struggles with depression after her husband, Martin (Channing Tatum), is released from prison following a conviction for insider trading. Following a suicide attempt, she begins treatment with psychiatrist Dr. Jonathan Banks (Jude Law), who prescribes her a new antidepressant called Ablixa, recommended by her former psychiatrist, Dr. Victoria Siebert (Catherine Zeta-Jones).
While Ablixa initially seems effective, Emily experiences severe side effects, including sleepwalking. During one such episode, she fatally stabs Martin. Emily is charged with murder but pleads not guilty by reason of insanity and is committed to a psychiatric facility under Dr. Banks's supervision.
