Serve the People is a 2022 South Korean romantic drama directed by Jang Cheol-soo, adapted from the 2005 novel by Chinese author Yan Lianke. Set in a fictional socialist country reminiscent of 1970s North Korea, the film explores themes of power, desire, and ideological conflict.
Mu-gwang (Yeon Woo-jin) is a model soldier assigned as a cook in the household of the division commander, Sa-taek (Jo Sung-ha). Ambitious and dedicated, Mu-gwang aims for promotion to provide a better life for his wife and child. However, his life takes an unexpected turn when the commander's young and alluring wife, Su-ryun (Ji An), begins to seduce him during her husband's absence.
Initially, Mu-gwang resists Su-ryun's advances, torn between his duty and personal morals. As their clandestine affair intensifies, Mu-gwang grapples with guilt, ambition, and the fear of discovery. Su-ryun manipulates the revolutionary slogan "Serve the People" to justify their relationship, challenging Mu-gwang's loyalty to the state's ideology.
The narrative delves into Mu-gwang's internal struggle as he balances his aspirations with the forbidden romance. The film culminates in a time jump, revealing the long-term consequences of their actions and offering a poignant reflection on desire and duty.
