Barroz: Guardian of Treasures (2024) is a Malayalam-language fantasy adventure film marking the directorial debut of veteran actor Mohanlal. Based on Jijo Punnoose’s novel Barroz: Guardian of D'Gama’s Treasure, the film intertwines elements of Indo-Portuguese folklore with themes of loyalty, legacy, and redemption.
Set against the backdrop of Goa, the story follows Barroz (played by Mohanlal), a 17th-century Malabari slave who becomes the eternal guardian of the hidden treasure of Portuguese explorer Cristóvão da Gama. Bound by a centuries-old magical oath, Barroz has protected the treasure for over 400 years, awaiting the arrival of a true descendant of the D'Gama lineage to whom he can rightfully hand over the riches.
The narrative unfolds when Isa (Maya Rao West), a 13-year-old girl and the 13th-generation descendant of the D'Gama family, arrives in Goa with her father, a business magnate intent on demolishing the ancestral palace to build a casino. As Isa explores the palace, she encounters Barroz, leading to a series of events that challenge her understanding of heritage and destiny. Together, they confront malevolent forces vying for the treasure, testing Barroz's loyalty and Isa's courage.
