Anora "Ani" Mikheeva, portrayed by Mikey Madison, is a 23-year-old stripper working in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn. Her life takes an unexpected turn when she meets Ivan "Vanya" Zakharov, the 21-year-old son of a Russian oligarch. Vanya, in the U.S. under the pretense of studying, leads a lavish lifestyle funded by his parents. He hires Anora for companionship, and their relationship quickly evolves. After a week of partying and bonding, Vanya proposes, and they impulsively marry in Las Vegas. Anora quits her job and moves into Vanya's opulent mansion, envisioning a new life.
However, their fairy tale is short-lived. Upon learning of the marriage, Vanya's parents, particularly his domineering mother Galina, disapprove and take swift action. They dispatch Toros, Vanya's godfather, along with henchmen Garnik and Igor, to annul the union. The situation escalates as Anora faces intimidation and is offered money to consent to an annulment. Despite her initial resistance, the overwhelming pressure from Vanya's family and his own lack of support compel her to agree. In a poignant conclusion, Anora confronts the realities of power dynamics and personal agency, leading to a bittersweet resolution.
